About Us
Our 40+ acre farm is nestled in the hills of West Virginia, near the small town of Buckhannon. We raise sheep, goats, and children. I am from California and my husband from Ohio, and we met almost 24 years ago at Disneyland when he was stationed at Camp Pendleton in the Marines. We've lived in 5 states but I believe West Virginia IS "almost heaven."
Motley Mutton seemed like a fitting name for my business, because I have
very few purebred animals. Motley means "1. Made up of diverse elements; 2.
Variegated in color; 3. Clothed in vari-colored garments." My sheep are a wide
mix of mutts, each with some unique weirdness I fell in love with. Mixed
among them are a few angora goats, and a few silly milk goats that think they're
human. If they ever hear a chip or candy bag rattle, they come running!
I really believe in the "permaculture" recipe for farming, and only wish
there were more hours in the day to implement more of it. We raise a big garden
and last year sold produce at the farmer's market. We are also home to
about 2 dozen free range chickens who provide us with wonderful eggs, and who
prefer sleeping in the trees to their comfy hen house. A couple of years ago we
had the opportunity to rescue and raise 2 baby raccoons whom we released
into the woods later that year. They still stop by occaisionally for a spot of
cat food.
We recently adopted a Great Pyrenees guard dog, Nikka, who we LOVE to
pieces. She guards the sheep with a vengeance, especially the babies, and goes
into a limp passive rebellion protest mode if we try to take her from the farm
(to the vet, the park, etc) Her and our old Lhasa Apso Molly get along
wonderfully.
My husband and I are currently parents to 8 children (3 on their own): 4
biological and 4 adopted. We've been foster parents for about 5 years, but
currently don't have a foster child residing with us. The kids have been
faithful members of 4H for years and years, and used to dance in an
Irish/Scottish/Morris troop at festivals and gatherings. We are also a
home-schooling family, and have been teaching our children at home for about 16 years now.
Everyone pitches in around the farm and I couldn't do near as much around
our place if it weren't for my very cooperative kids and my long-suffering
husband. I am truly blessed to have them all!
